ANGLER'S RETREAT is run by Marion and Billy Felton on their croft in South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. They provide comfortable Bed & Breakfast accommodation combined with expert advice on the wealth of fishing available locally. A self-catering 6 berth caravan can also be hired, giving anglers freedom to come and go as they please. Other outdoor activities such as walking and birdwatching are also catered for. Some of the most magnificent and unspoilt beaches in Europe are found here. Crofting and the Gaelic culture remain central to island life. Birdwatching can be particularly rewarding, with rare species such as golden and sea eagles and corncrake, a local species of song-thrush, as well as numerous waders and passing migrants. The RSPB reserve at Balranald is about 12 miles away.

FISHING IN THE UISTS

North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have almost 2000 lochs holding wild brown trout, from bright red-speckled hill lochan trout of a few ounces to magnificent machair loch specimens of up to and over 3lbs. There are also outstanding sea trout in the sea lochs along the coastline of the islands.

AVAILABILITY: No rod licence is required on the Uists but permission is needed to fish for sea trout from the controlling Estates, sometimes by day ticket. However, a great deal of high quality brown trout fishing is available for a small fee.

Seasons: Brown Trout - 15 March to 5 October. Sea Trout - 11 February to 15 or 30 October. It is illegal to fish for sea trout on Sundays. Anglers are asked not to fish for brown trout on Sundays as it offends religious beliefs in most areas.

BROWN TROUT - TACKLE AND TECHNIQUES
A fly rod of about 10 feet, AFTM 5-9; a selection of Scottish and Irish flies, sizes 14 to 8; floating and intermediate lines and leader material of 3 to 6 lbs BS. Most anglers use leaders with two or three flies, the bob fly usually being bushier in order to wake up the fish. Dapping rods are also recommended and can provide thrilling sport in the right conditions. Bait or spinning is allowed on some sea pools but most anglers prefer fly. Beginners or children can learn to fish in the many lochs containing small, hungry trout. Best months for brown trout are May, June, early July and September.
