THE CROSS KEYS INN is situated in the picturesque village of Ettrickbridge near Selkirk in the Scottish Borders. It was built as a coaching inn in the 17th century and retains much of its original character, with oak-beamed ceilings, open log fires and an intimate and welcoming public bar featuring an extraordinary collection of memorabilia. The Inn has five rooms and there are five adjacent self-catering cottages. The rolling hills of the Ettrick and Yarrow valleys are steeped in history and romance, and are a haven for hill-walkers and naturalists. Other nearby attractions include golf courses, Bowhill House and Estate - the stately home of the Duke of Buccleuch, Sir Walter Scott's famous home at Abbotsford, and Melrose Abbey.

COURTYARD COTTAGES
The Cross Keys is popular with visiting anglers many of whom stay in the 2 or 3 bedroomed self-catering cottages. These are set in an enclosed courtyard, with patios and a well-kept garden. Rooms are comfortable, light and spacious, with a 'rustic' feel, and views to the surrounding countryside. Each cottage has its own fridge, TV, shower and cooking facilities, and there are rod and drying rooms, freezers, and ample parking space. The Inn provides lunch and evening menus for those who prefer not to cook. Packed lunches are available.

Bookings and Tariffs: Weekly prices for the Courtyard Cottages range from 160 - 395 UK pounds depending on size and season. B&B in the Inn is from 25UKP (double) and 30-40UKP (single) per night. Full details and brochure from: The Cross Keys Inn, Ettrickbridge, Selkirk, Scotland TD7 5JN.

Salmon and Sea Trout | Rivers Ettrick and Yarrow
FISHING AT ETTRICKBRIDGE
The Cross Keys is perfectly placed for fishing on the rivers Ettrick and Yarrow, both of which have good runs of salmon, particularly in the autumn. Spring salmon also enter the Ettrick, which is a major tributary of the Tweed and is joined by the smaller Yarrow Water a few miles below Ettrickbridge. Much of the salmon fishing is let by Buccleuch Estates, and permits can be obtained at the Cross Keys Inn. Fishing can also be arranged for salmon on the Tweed and for local trout lochs. Both the Ettrick and Yarrow are essentially spate rivers, but can be productive in the right conditions. They are not, however, renowned as trout waters, although there is good trout fishing available on many stretches of the nearby Tweed and the various lochs in the area. The lower reaches of the Ettrick are tree-lined, while those above Ettrickbridge are more open with long stretches of streamy water broken by good holding pools.

Tackle: The Ettrick can often be fished from the bank with medium sized salmon or grilse fly rods, but waders are recommended. Fly is the preferred method - and the only one after September 14th. Standard Tweed fly patterns are used. A full-time ghillie oversees the fishing and offers guidance on the best methods and pools to fish.

Salmon and Sea Trout Season
1 February - 30 November
Autumn fishing on the Ettrick above Ettrickbridge

Availability and Prices: Day and weekly permits are generally available throughout the season, but there is a higher demand in the late autumn as the Ettrick shares the River Tweed's November closing date. Prices range from 20 - 40 UK pounds per rod per day, depending on the time of year.
