Scotland's east coast rivers continue to benefit from the buy-out
of the drift-nets off the Northumbrian coast. Salmon rod catches on
the River Tweed in particular have improved significantly and now average
over 14,000 per annum since the reduction in the
North East Drift Net Fishery. Many other Scottish salmon
rivers have also seen an upturn over the past
few years, thanks to a combination of habitat improvement, catch
and release, and increased stocking. More good news comes with the
announcement that, after years of protest, Ireland has finally bowed
to pressure and will end industrial salmon netting off its coasts from
January
1 2007. This will certainly boost rod catches on the Scottish
west coast rivers. Of course, Scotland remains a top venue for trout fishing, whether on stocked waters or for wild brownies and sea trout. Wild brown trout fishing can be excellent from May onwards, and there is probably no better place to experience this type of fishing than on the hill lochs of the Scottish Highlands and islands. |
